Monday Magicks ~ Osprey as a Totem Animal Spirit
An Osprey hanging out the fence in our backyard!
Last week we got an awesome visitor in our backyard! This is an osprey: they are kind of a cross between a falcon and a golden eagle. These wonderful birds of prey are all over Spokane — especially along the river. When we lived a few hundred yards from the Spokane River, we saw them all the time. The house we live in now is almost 2 miles away so it was definitely a wonderful surprise to see him on our back fence!
Osprey are also part of the totem animal spirits. Being that I am Pagan, this has an even more special meaning to me. Of course, after reading one of the many meanings, I get the picture and know WHY he showed up. Below is an excerpt relating to the Osprey Totem from an excellent site that talks about Animal Totems.
Osprey teaches many lessons; how to streamline your life, how carry a heavy burden, and how to dive in with pinpoint accuracy. He will also show how to build a foundation in the spiritual and physical and to ride the current of life in both worlds enabling a balance of peace and harmony. Osprey also teaches of streamlining our thoughts and emotions that also facilitate balance this within that propagates outward. Talk about enlightening! This is so right on with what I have been going through these past couple weeks. And I just wanted to share the awesomeness of the Osprey that decided to preen himself in our backyard on our back fence! Amazing!!!

OMG we already have to mow our lawn with all the rain we have been getting.

We had Kestrels visit us last year. They took over the Magpie nest in one of our trees. They had 5 chicks and seemed to like it here. I hope they return, even though this year isn’t as much of a rodent year.

We have a bird that looks like a magpie, and many people tell me it is, but they are so much bigger than what pictures I find; plus the tail is almost twice it’s height with beautiful sapphire blue colored feathers. They are noisy but I love them whatever they are! LOL
I looked up krestels — what beautiful birds of prey!!! I hope it comes back for you this year!

It looks similar to the European Magpie … I did an image search (d’oh — homer simpson style) for spokane wa magpie — we have black billed magpies
here’s the link: http://birdweb.org/birdweb/bird/black-billed_magpie But the blue on their tail feathers is so beautiful and blue … sometimes it’s brighter or darker. They are scavengers really but I like them. We just don’t see them where we live now 
at the first house we lived in here in Spokane, I saw them every day because we lived so close to the river. I miss them … but I do have morning doves, lots of robins, a few different kinds of finches and we also have a growing family of quail! OMG I love those little fat things! I have seen a pheasant in our yard last year (weird but there it was sitting on our back fence) — much like the osprey just sitting thing preening himself in the sun 
We have mice that live in our elm tree and come visit the hubby in the man cave (garage) but they do not come in the house. And if htey did I don’t think my cats would even know what to do with them! UGH LOL

I haven’t been paying too much attention to the animals lately….
But it’s cool for you, to see a bird you normally wouldn’t where you currently are.

Birdy, thank you so much for the tip! I fell in love with the osprey when we first moved up here to Spokane WA. they are all over the river! Such graceful birds. We live far enough away from the river that this was such a wonderful gift and surprise to have one sitting on our back fence!
We are looking at getting so property farther out of the city of Spokane and I am looking forward to all the animal life that we just do not get where we live right now. Although we are bustling with all kinds of sparrows, finches, greckles, quail, morning doves and even chickadees … waiting for the robins. They will be back soon!
